1. Why every cooperative leader must also be a trainer
The long-term success of an energy cooperative depends not only on the technical quality of the project, but on the community understanding, trusting, and taking ownership of the model. This requires that the leaders who have completed this training program become, in turn, trainers within their own communities: explaining to new members how the system works, answering questions about billing or benefits, and training other board members so that knowledge does not depend on a single person.
Train-the-trainer is a deliberate methodological approach: rather than having an external expert directly educate every community member -- which does not scale -- a group of local leaders is trained to replicate and adapt that knowledge to their own context, with the added advantage that these leaders speak the same cultural and technical language as their neighbors, generating greater trust and better learning retention.
2. Adult learning principles (andragogy)
Teaching adults is fundamentally different from teaching children or adolescents. Adults learn best when:
- They understand why they need the information (immediate relevance to their life or role).
- They can connect new knowledge with their prior experience.
- They participate actively rather than just listening passively.
- The learning focuses on solving concrete problems rather than abstract theory.
An effective community trainer does not deliver a lecture on solar energy; instead, they start from real community questions ("Why did my bill only go down a little?" "What happens if it rains for many days in a row?") and build the technical explanation from those concerns.
Another central principle of andragogy is respecting adults' autonomy and prior experience: many community members have valuable practical knowledge (for example, farmers who understand local climate cycles perfectly, even though they may not know the term "solar irradiance"). A good trainer recognizes and validates that prior knowledge, rather than treating participants as if they know nothing, which generates greater openness and participation.
3. Designing an effective community education presentation
Designing a good community energy education presentation requires following a simple but deliberate structure:
- Define a single learning objective per session (for example, "attendees understand how their bill savings are calculated," not "explain everything about solar energy"), avoiding the temptation to cover too many technical topics in a single session.
- Use plain language and concrete examples from the local context, avoiding unnecessary technical jargon (or explaining it immediately if indispensable), and drawing on analogies familiar to the community.
- Include a moment of active participation -- a question to the audience, a short exercise, a visual demonstration -- because an adult audience's attention drops quickly during a purely verbal presentation lasting more than 10-15 continuous minutes.
- Close with a clear summary of the key points and an explicit space for questions, demonstrating that the trainer is genuinely open to the community's doubts, including those that challenge the cooperative model.
4. Basic facilitation and oral presentation techniques
Beyond content, the way you communicate determines whether the message actually lands. A community trainer should attend to basic aspects such as:
- Speaking pace (neither too fast from nervousness, nor monotone).
- Eye contact with different people in the audience (not only the person who seems most interested).
- The use of silence after a question to give people real time to respond, rather than answering yourself out of discomfort with the silence.
- Open body language (avoid crossing your arms, move naturally, do not turn your back to the audience when using visual materials).
Equally important is handling difficult questions or skeptical positions within the community -- for example, someone who doubts that the cooperative will actually distribute benefits fairly. A good trainer does not become defensive when facing these questions, but receives them calmly, acknowledges the legitimacy of the concern, and responds with concrete, verifiable information (showing, for example, the member registry and the billing mechanism covered in Module 5), turning skepticism into an opportunity to build greater trust through transparency.
5. Reference case: the Energie Samen Academy coaching model
Energie Samen developed its own train-the-trainer program called the Energie Samen Academy, which has trained more than 3,500 "coaches" or volunteer facilitators across the country.
These coaches are not necessarily technical energy experts; many are active members of their own local cooperatives who receive standardized training on the basics of renewable energy, cooperative governance, and -- fundamentally -- community facilitation techniques, and then replicate informational sessions in their own towns and neighborhoods.
The success of this model lies in its decentralized scale: rather than a small central Energie Samen team trying to reach hundreds of communities directly, knowledge is multiplied through a network of local coaches who build trust precisely because they are part of the community they are speaking to.
This same principle of "train to multiply" is what this Colombian program seeks to replicate: every leader who completes this course should leave equipped not only to manage their cooperative, but to train the next generation of members and leaders in their own territory.

What worked in another context and what is transferable to Colombia
Energie Samen Academy
The Energie Samen Academy structured its coaching program in three progressive levels:
- An introductory level covering the fundamentals of community energy and cooperative governance.
- An intermediate level focused on facilitation and communication skills.
- An advanced level aimed at coaches who also advise new cooperatives during their startup phase.
Each coach receives standardized materials (presentations, infographics, answers to frequently asked questions) that they can freely adapt to their local context, provided they maintain the accuracy of the underlying technical and regulatory information.

- What advantages and risks come with giving local trainers the freedom to "adapt" content to their own context, rather than requiring them to follow a fixed script?
- How could this Colombian program keep its local trainers up to date on regulatory changes (for example, if CREG modifies the net-billing scheme) without outdated information continuing to be replicated in communities?
- What level structure (introductory, intermediate, advanced) would make sense for the trainers graduating from this program, given that they have already completed eight modules of technical training?
Module deliverable
The output of this exercise feeds the cooperative's portfolio
15-minute community presentation
Each participant prepares and delivers a 15-minute presentation on a basic solar energy topic aimed at their own community (or, during the practice session, at their peer group), following this structure:
- Opening with a real question or situation from the community.
- Explanation of the technical concept using plain language and a local analogy.
- A moment of active audience participation.
- Closing with a summary and a question-and-answer space.
Possible topics: "how a solar panel works," "what net-billing is and how it affects my bill," "what an energy cooperative is and why I should join."
During the session, each participant presents for 10-12 minutes to their small group (4-5 people), receives peer feedback using the rubric, and adjusts.
The final deliverable includes the actual delivery (recorded on video with their phone or documented in a report) to the participant's real community -- not just to the workshop peer group -- along with a brief self-assessment.
